Albion
Albion is the world of Fable, a fairytale version of medieval England that Playground Games has built, for the first time in the series, as one seamless open world the Hero can roam freely from early in the game. Its named places include Briar Hill, Bowerstone, Bloodstone, Silverbrook and Wraithmarsh; a map size, region count and fast travel have not been announced.
Albion is the world of Fable: a fairytale version of medieval England, and for the first time in the series a single open world you can explore seamlessly, going where you like from early in the game. In this part of the Developer_Direct segment (GameSpot's upload, Jan 22, 2026) Playground says that venturing out is "a huge moment because this is Albion like you've never seen it before", over a run of landscapes: a misty valley under storm clouds, an apple tree in sunlit grass, a valley at sunset. The narration lists "idyllic rolling hills, magical forests, bustling villages, sleepy hamlets, oversized vegetable patches, and stunning vistas", then: "our Albion is truly open world for the first time". Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, said those words at the show (CGMagazine, Jan 22, 2026), and Xbox Wire describes the setting as "medieval England through a lens" in his own interview (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). Fable launches on Feb 23, 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5.

A fairytale, not a fantasy
Playground built Albion around a line it found in Lionhead's old design documents: "Fable is Fairytale, not Fantasy". Fulton explains that fantasy is grand, sweeping and serious, while fairytales are "intimate", small stories about "what happens when magic touches the lives of ordinary folks", with a moral at their heart, and that the idea "runs through our art style, it runs through our world building" (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). Britishness is the other pillar, which is why Albion is full of dark humor and, in the store's words, "chickens... lots of chickens" (Steam). The official screenshots show the fairytale side plainly: a giant beanstalk curling over a thatched village, tomatoes the size of boulders around a cottage.
Albion is not the Albion of the Lionhead trilogy carried forward. Fulton says the team chose not to be bound to the old games' timeline, its events or its characters, "to allow ourselves the freedom to build our own Albion" (Xbox Wire). The world's in-game past, told through Playground's "History of Albion" posts, is on Lore and History of Albion.
The places named so far
Playground has named a handful of Albion's settlements, as of Oct 21, 2026:
- Briar Hill, the "sleepy rural village" where the Hero grows up and the game begins, home of the Rose & Thorn pub.
- Bowerstone, "Albion's iconic capital city", with Fairfax Castle, the old clock tower and the Heroes' Guild.
- Bloodstone, a city in the north with two feuding heirs, Jenny and Jacob (Xbox Wire, Jun 7, 2026).
- Silverbrook, whose sheriff is Nigel, and the setting of the quest with Dave the Giant; killing him leaves a giant corpse that can draw tourists and raise house prices (Xbox Wire, Jun 10, 2026).
- Wraithmarsh, home region of Isabel, "the Hero of Wraithmarsh" (Xbox Wire, Jun 7, 2026).
- The Underwall, where the Hero journeys in the gamescom 2026 combat demo (PlayStation Blog, Aug 28, 2026).
Playground's in-world history also names older places, such as Arrowmark, Oakshire, Deepwood and the River Bower (official site, Sep 21, 2026); whether all of them can be visited has not been said.
The north of Albion
The north of Albion is harsher country. "In the north of Albion, you'll find mountains, craggy coastlines, spooky marshes, and the bleak, windswept city of Bloodstone," Playground says, over shots of a figure on a rocky crag against a pale sky and a dark town lit by lanterns. There the Hero meets "the leaders of two rival gangs vying for power" and uncovers "the sinister, but extremely well-organized Cult of Shadows". CGMagazine summed up the biomes the Developer_Direct showed as rolling hills, forests with giant mushrooms, fog-covered swamps and mountaintops with ancient statues (CGMagazine, Jan 22, 2026).
Freedom to roam: "no ticking bomb"
Once the Hero leaves Briar Hill, the whole world is open. "As soon as you leave your village, you can go pretty much anywhere," Fulton says, and the story was written so that "there's no ticking bomb": you could go to "the most northerly village in Albion, get a job, settle down and get married" and the story will wait (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). Playground shaped progression so that any settlement is fun to visit from the start, and has said it will explain leveling later. On the gamescom podcast Fulton said some players head straight for the Heroes' Guild while others go exploring, and "we support them both" (Official Xbox Podcast, Sep 9, 2026). The main story takes "around 15-20 hours", with about as much again in side content, per the official FAQ.
Seamless, and why it matters to the series
The seamless world is the biggest change from the original games. In Digital Foundry's discussion of the gameplay demo (DF Direct Weekly, Jun 15, 2026), one host recalls that the first Fable promised a game where "you could do anything", but "turned out it was just a bunch of loading screens" with every area "broken up into tiny little segments"; the sequels improved on that, he says, but this one is "an example where I do think an open world actually makes sense". Fulton makes the same point about buildings: he comes "from a generation of games where you'd have to load into an interior", and in Fable "we just seamlessly move" into a fully dressed room (Official Xbox Podcast). He calls Albion "100% the most richly detailed world we've ever built" (GamesRadar+, Jan 27, 2026). Albion runs on ForzaTech, the engine of Playground's Forza Horizon games (Wikidata).
Horses and getting around
Horses are in Fable. As Playground calls its Albion "beautiful, handcrafted, and richly detailed", this clip cuts to captured play, with the on-screen prompts showing, of a Hero riding a horse across a sunlit meadow under great trees. Fulton has contrasted the pace with Forza Horizon: "The world in Forza Horizon is experienced at up to 250 miles an hour," while "in Fable, we move at the speed of a horse" (GamesRadar+, Jan 27, 2026). An official Steam screenshot also shows a rider on a chestnut horse before a white castle (Steam). Other mounts, and fast travel, have not been announced, as of Oct 21, 2026.
Demon Doors
Demon Doors are back: "sentient and overly opinionated stone doors" that "gatekeep mysterious areas and the rewards that lie within" (official FAQ). Playground said one of them hides a chicken-kicking minigame (official site, Jun 7, 2026). Where they stand in Albion, and how to open them, has not been shown.
Day, night and the people of Albion
Albion keeps living whether the Hero is there or not. Its "1,000+ hand crafted NPCs" each have a home, a job and a schedule of sleep, work and leisure, so towns change through the day; Fulton said the environment team had to make sure every settlement has "enough houses with enough beds" for everyone to sleep in at night (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). The system is on Living Population. Your deeds earn Reputations settlement by settlement, so you can be a different Hero in each town (Reputation and Morality).
What is not known
As of Oct 21, 2026, Playground and Xbox have not announced:
- a map size or a count of regions;
- fast travel, or any mount besides the horse;
- a full list of settlements;
- the name or release date of the new region in Order of the Hero, which Fulton called "coming later next year" on the podcast.
