Development

Fable is developed by a newly formed team at Playground Games, the Forza Horizon studio Microsoft bought in 2018, on Playground's ForzaTech engine, with support from Eidos Montreal. It was announced in July 2020, delayed twice, and launches on Feb 23, 2027.

Fable is being made by a newly formed team at Playground Games, the British studio best known for Forza Horizon, which joined Microsoft in 2018 and revealed the game in July 2020; it runs on Playground's own ForzaTech engine, Eidos Montreal supports the work, and after two delays it launches on Feb 23, 2027. In the Developer_Direct of Jan 22, 2026, Playground's presenter says the studio's open worlds have "typically involved sports cars", that the Fable team was "built from scratch" by people with "a deep love for the franchise", and that the game is made both for fans and for players new to the series. That segment ended on the Autumn 2026 date that Xbox later moved to February 2027 (Release Date and Time).

From Lionhead to Playground

The original Fable games were made by Lionhead Studios in Guildford, which Microsoft bought on Apr 6, 2006, when Fable and Fable: The Lost Chapters had sold over 2 million copies. On Mar 7, 2016 Microsoft stopped work on Fable Legends and proposed closing Lionhead, and the studio closed that spring. The series' history is on Fable Series.

On Jun 10, 2018, Xbox announced that Playground Games had joined Microsoft Studios and would bring its open-world experience to "an entirely new project". Playground had until then made only racing games. Microsoft has not said when work on Fable began, and reports differ, so this viki states no start year.

Lionhead's documents and "Fairytale, not Fantasy"

Playground calls Fable its first open-world action RPG and a "new beginning" that stays "faithful to the spirit of the classic Lionhead trilogy", as the studio puts it at the start of the Developer_Direct segment, which lists its "action, drama, British humor, moral dilemmas, and quite a few chickens". Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, told Xbox Wire that the team received Lionhead's design documents from storage, and that one of them gave the reboot its first pillar: "Fable is Fairytale, not Fantasy". Britishness (its humor, tone and sensibility) is another pillar; Fulton named the sitcoms Peep Show, The IT Crowd and The Office as touchstones. He also said plainly that "we're not Lionhead" and called the game a "new beginning", not tied to the trilogy's timeline. He told the PlayStation Blog that "Fable is not a remake or a sequel."

ForzaTech and the technology

Fable runs on ForzaTech, the engine Playground built for Forza Horizon, which a Playground developer described to TechRadar as "the same engine as Forza Horizon with a ton of additional technology on top". Fulton told GamesRadar+ that the world of Forza Horizon "is experienced at up to 250 miles an hour" while "in Fable, we move at the speed of a horse", which lets Albion be far more detailed up close; he called it "100% the most richly detailed world we've ever built".

Digital Foundry looked at the 30-minute gameplay video in its DF Direct Weekly of Jun 15, 2026 and praised the "subtle lighting", the detail and the characters, noting that Playground had never before shown it could render people well, which this footage "obviously puts to bed". The PC version's features (DLSS 4.5, FSR 3 and 4, XeSS 2.1, uncapped frame rates) and the 135 GB install are on PC System Requirements.

Eidos Montreal and other help

Xbox said on Jun 9, 2024 that "Eidos Montreal will be supporting the ongoing development of Fable." Playground leads the game; Eidos Montreal's share of the work has not been described.

The reveal and the trailers

Xbox announced Fable at its Xbox Games Showcase on Jul 23, 2020, "developed by Playground Games for Xbox Series X, and Windows 10", with a short teaser and no date. The Jun 11, 2023 trailer introduced Richard Ayoade as Dave the Giant, and the Jun 9, 2024 trailer introduced Humphry and a 2025 window. Every trailer and show is on Trailers and Showcases.

Two delays

On Feb 25, 2025, Craig Duncan, then head of Xbox Game Studios, said on the Official Xbox Podcast: "We previously announced Fable as 2025, we are actually going to give Fable more time," adding that it "is going to ship in 2026 now" and that he had "unequivocal confidence in the Playground team". At the Developer_Direct of Jan 22, 2026, Xbox dated it Autumn 2026 and announced the PlayStation 5 version.

On May 29, 2026, Xbox moved it again: "we're moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves" (Game Informer). Matt Booty, Xbox's Chief Content Officer, said Xbox wanted the game to have "a window of its own" (GameSpot). On Jun 7, 2026, the date became Feb 23, 2027, with Premium Edition Early Access from Feb 18 (Xbox Wire).

2026: showing the game

The Developer_Direct segment of Jan 22, 2026 was the first long look: Briar Hill, Character Creation (heads, clothing, hair, skin tone, tattoos and scars, as the developer here lists them), Combat, Reputation and Morality, property and the Living Population. The cast was announced on Jun 7, 2026 with Hayley Atwell as Isabel (all of them on Voice Cast), the Living Population deep dive followed on Jun 10, and at gamescom on Aug 26, 2026 press and creators played the game for the first time. Voice recording ran in several studios in parallel: Playground told TechRadar the game has over 150,000 lines of dialogue.

Playground and Turn 10 (Sep 2026)

On Sep 22, 2026, Matt Booty wrote to Xbox staff that "Playground and Turn 10 will come together as one studio focused on the Forza and Fable franchises." The memo said nothing about Fable's date, which stays Feb 23, 2027. More on the studio is on Playground Games.

Music

The score is by Jacob Shea: the Premium Edition includes the soundtrack, "music by Jacob Shea" (official site). The official Fable account shared a track called "Bowerstone" on Oct 20, 2026 (DayOne).
