Property and Jobs
In Fable the Hero can buy any house or shop (every house in Bowerstone is for sale), become a landlord who sets rent or an employer who sets wages, and take jobs such as blacksmith. Tenants who cannot pay move out, and villagers who dislike you may refuse to work for you.
Fable lets the Hero buy houses and shops, become a landlord who sets the rent or an employer who sets the wages, and take jobs such as blacksmith to earn money; in Bowerstone, "you can go inside every single building, and buy every single house" (Xbox Wire, Aug 28, 2026). In this part of the Developer_Direct segment (GameSpot's upload, Jan 22, 2026) a developer describes the "game within a game" of the old Fable games that Playground rebuilt: "Buying a house, getting a job, making some money." The store page sums it up as "Get filthy rich as a landlord or blacksmith" (Steam). Your tenants and staff are villagers of the Living Population, and whether they will work for you depends on your Reputation. Fable launches on Feb 23, 2027.

Buying houses
Any house can be yours. The developers go on, "Buying another house, buying every house in Albion, buying every business in Albion, getting rich", while the footage shows the Hero walking up to a front gate under the name "No. 5 Townview", then inside a furnished home. Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, says of Bowerstone that "you can go inside every single building, every single house, whether you own it and you're going home, or maybe you're breaking into it to rob it, or it's a shop", and that the interiors are set dressed to tell "a story about the people that live there and about their status" (Official Xbox Podcast, Sep 9, 2026).
Your first house will be a modest one. On the same podcast (its transcript on Xbox Wire), Fulton says the top of Bowerstone near the palace is informally "The Nobles District", where "you kind of aspire to live", but "the likelihood is you're going to be buying a house down in Copperbottom as your first house." Those district names come from his spoken words; how they appear in the game is not confirmed. House prices also move with events: in Silverbrook, killing Dave the Giant and leaving his corpse nearby has "an impact on house prices" (Xbox Wire, Jun 10, 2026).
Being a landlord
The people in your houses are real villagers. A developer says a villager's job may be "working for you because you hired them", the Hero greets a worker ("Hey, you. Working hard?" "How can I help you, boss?"), then: "Maybe the bed they sleep in is in a house you own because you're the landlord. Or maybe their bed is on the street because you evicted them", and a villager tells the Hero "You're awful." Dan Greer, Lead Game Designer, explains the link: "You could buy their house and become their landlord, or buy a shop and become their employer. You could do both of those, and control their wages and their rent", but "if I don't pay them enough to afford their rent, they'll have to move out of their home and I won't have them as tenants anymore" (Xbox Wire, Jun 10, 2026).
Owning businesses
A shop needs staff, and staff need to like you. Greer: "someone might refuse to work for me because they don't like my actions or reputation, and if nobody wants to work for me, then the shop never opens and I don't get any income" (Xbox Wire, Jun 10, 2026). Hiring helps your standing in return: "if you give someone a job, that might change how they feel about you." Rising in business can also change a settlement's view of you: "someone who thinks I'm silly for being a chicken chaser might change their tune when I become a rich entrepreneur." How much a shop earns and how often it pays out has not been announced, as of Oct 21, 2026.
Jobs
The Hero can also work. In Xbox's Developer_Direct teaser (Jan 22, 2026) the Hero holds a glowing blade to a stone wheel with a "2x" multiplier and a timer on screen, walks a village street, then stands at a shop counter as a worker asks "How can I help you boss?" Blacksmith is the job the store names ("Get filthy rich as a landlord or blacksmith", Steam); CGMagazine also reported odd jobs from the Developer_Direct (CGMagazine, Jan 22, 2026). Taking a job is never required: Fulton says you "could go to the most northerly village in Albion, get a job, settle down and get married if you want", and the story will wait (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). The full list of jobs has not been published, as of Oct 21, 2026.
Shopping, prices and robbing
Shops charge you according to who you are in that town: a settlement's Reputations shape everything from catcalls to romance, and "it can even affect prices in shops" (Fulton, Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). Fulton also admits to robbing houses, "a thing I do quite a lot in the game" (Official Xbox Podcast, Sep 9, 2026); being known as a thief is one of the Reputations a settlement can give you.

BowerstoneBowerstone is Albion's capital in Fable, "the series' reimagined capital city": a dense, vertical city where every building can be entered and every house bought, home to Fairfax Castle, the old clock tower and the Heroes' Guild, where the Hero meets Humphry. -
Living PopulationFable's "Living Population" is its cast of more than 1,000 hand-designed villagers, each with a name, a Trait, a home, a job and a daily schedule, all fully voiced by about 100 actors. The Hero can befriend, employ, rent to, marry or kill every adult among them. -
Reputation and MoralityFable has no good-or-evil meter. Deeds that someone sees, or that you repeat, earn the Hero Reputations such as "Chicken Chaser", kept separately in each settlement (up to six at once), and every villager judges them by their own worldview, which changes catcalls, romance, marriage and shop prices.

Dave the GiantDave the Giant, played by Richard Ayoade, is a gardener who turns himself into a giant with a magical growth formula; in Fable the Hero chooses whether to kill or spare him, and the choice changes the settlement of Silverbrook.
-
Character CreationFable lets you design your Hero in a character creator, choosing from a range of heads and customizing hairstyle, skin tone, clothing, tattoos and scars. The Hero is voiced by Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach, and your looks no longer change with your deeds as they did in the Lionhead games. -
ChickensChickens are Fable's running joke and part of its systems: kicking them where people can see earns the Reputation "Chicken Chaser", the Befowl spell turns enemies into chickens, giant fire-breathing chickens are enemies, a Demon Door hides a chicken-kicking minigame, and pre-orders get a Chicken Suit and a Toy Chicken.
