Chickens

Chickens are Fable's running joke and part of its systems: kicking them where people can see earns the Reputation "Chicken Chaser", the Befowl spell turns enemies into chickens, giant fire-breathing chickens are enemies, a Demon Door hides a chicken-kicking minigame, and pre-orders get a Chicken Suit and a Toy Chicken.

Chickens are Fable's running joke and part of its systems: kicking one in front of witnesses starts the Reputation "Chicken Chaser", the Befowl spell turns enemies into chickens, giant fire-breathing chickens are enemies, a Demon Door hides a chicken-kicking minigame, and pre-orders come with a Chicken Suit and a Toy Chicken. Playground Games puts them in its own pitch: in this clip from the Developer_Direct segment (GameSpot's upload, Jan 22, 2026), the narrator says the game is "about choices and their consequences", packed with action, drama, British humor, moral dilemmas "and quite a few chickens". The store page promises "chickens... lots of chickens" (Steam), and Xbox announced the show as one of "British humor and (of course) chickens" (Xbox Wire, Jan 8, 2026).

In a forest clearing strewn with pine needles, a figure in a dark long coat with a sheath across the back crouches low holding a sword. Facing them, a rooster as tall as a person, with a red comb and wattle and red, black and bronze plumage, spreads its wings and opens its beak wide. Feathers and sparks fly between them. No game interface is shown.

Chicken Chaser: kicking chickens

Kick a chicken where someone can see you and you start to earn a Reputation for it. In Xbox's short Developer_Direct teaser, just after the "Your choices change the world" card, a Hero walks down a cobbled street and "+Chicken Chaser" appears at the top of the screen. Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, explained the system with exactly this example, "because kicking chickens is classic Fable": if a person sees you kicking a chicken you begin to be known as a "Chicken Chaser", and if enough people see it, or you do it a lot, it becomes one of the things you are known for in that settlement (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026).

It is not simply good or evil. Each villager judges a Chicken Chaser by their own worldview, and opinions can change: Dan Greer, Lead Game Designer, wrote that someone who thinks him silly for being a chicken chaser "might change their tune" once he becomes a rich entrepreneur (Xbox Wire, Jun 10, 2026). How Reputations work, settlement by settlement, is on Reputation and Morality.

Behind one of the returning Demon Doors waits "a foe so ancient and so iconic" that no Hero's journey is complete without it: a chicken-kicking minigame (fablethegame.com, Jun 7, 2026). Playground has not said where that door is, as of Oct 20, 2026; Demon Doors are on Albion.

Befowl: turning enemies into chickens

The spell Befowl turns people into chickens. In the gamescom demo on Aug 26, 2026, a Befowled enemy was effectively harmless, so the Hero could deal with others first or kick it away, and Befowl cast on an undead enemy made an undead chicken. Will Kennedy, Associate Game Director, wrote that it turns an enemy into a chicken temporarily, a tool for players who like to control the battlefield (PlayStation Blog, Aug 28, 2026). The other spells are on Magic and Spells.

Giant fire-breathing chickens

Some chickens fight back. The narrator introduces "this fearsome cockatrice, a giant fire-breathing chicken" as one of Fable's brand-new enemies, while the footage shows a Hero squaring up to a huge winged creature on a forest path. The store page jokes that being a Hero is like being a celebrity, if celebrities "occasionally battled giant fire-breathing chickens" (Steam), and CGMagazine called the Developer_Direct boss a Cockatrice (CGMagazine, Jan 22, 2026). Two of the official Steam screenshots show a Hero fighting a giant rooster. The rest of Fable's foes are on Enemies.

The Chicken Suit and the Toy Chicken

Pre-ordering any edition of Fable gives the Pre-Order Content Pack: the "questionably heroic" Chicken Suit and three gifts, a Wild Flower Bouquet, a Toy Chicken and a Scones & Jam Picnic Hamper, with the note "Use them to build your reputation" (Xbox Wire, Jun 7, 2026). The offer ends at launch and is limited to one per account. Gifts change what villagers think of you, so the Toy Chicken is something to give, not only a joke. Prices and the other editions are on Editions and Pre-order Bonuses.

Chickens in the series

Kicking chickens goes back to Lionhead's games, which is why Fulton calls it "classic Fable" (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). The chickens were back before the reboot had a date: TechRadar reported a chicken kick among the pre-alpha clips Xbox showed on the Official Xbox Podcast on Feb 25, 2025. The older games are on Fable Series.
