Character Creation

Fable lets you design your Hero in a character creator, choosing from a range of heads and customizing hairstyle, skin tone, clothing, tattoos and scars. The Hero is voiced by Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach, and your looks no longer change with your deeds as they did in the Lionhead games.

Fable lets you design your Hero: you "pick from a range of different character heads and customize your clothing, hair, skin tone, tattoos, and scars", as a developer puts it in this part of the Developer_Direct segment (GameSpot's upload, Jan 22, 2026). The official FAQ confirms "selecting different heads, hair styles, skin tones and more" (Fable FAQ). The clip opens with "we want you to play as the hero you want to be. And that starts with being able to choose how your hero character looks"; the footage then shows a Hero standing before a wooden wardrobe in a paneled room, changing from one outfit to the next. The Hero is voiced by Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach (Xbox Wire, Jun 7, 2026). Fable launches on Feb 23, 2027.

In a dim room with a carved wooden wardrobe and a long chest of drawers, a smiling person stands on a round patterned rug, hands on hips. They wear a tall blue hat with a green brim and a feather, a blue doublet embroidered in gold with green trim, a white collar and cuffs, dark breeches, white stockings and buckled shoes. Sunlight falls through a window at right. No game interface is shown.

The creator

The character creator is the start of being "the hero you want to be", Playground's phrase for the whole game. Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, said after the Developer_Direct: "Character customization is one that we were delighted to clear up. That's something that we've been sitting on for years now... In Fable, you can be the hero you want to be in every sense" (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). Playground has named heads, hair, skin tone, clothing, tattoos and scars; it has not listed body types, height, age, makeup or other sliders, as of Oct 21, 2026, and screenshots of the creator itself have not been released.

Xbox's Developer_Direct teaser (Jan 22, 2026) puts it in one card: "Be the Hero you want to be", followed by the Hero in front of the same wardrobe in two different outfits, one after the other, before a bow is drawn in a field.

The Hero's voice

The Hero speaks, with one of two voices: Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach, both listed by Xbox for "the Hero of Briar Hill" (Xbox Wire, Jun 7, 2026). Whether the voice is tied to the head you pick or chosen on its own has not been said, as of Oct 21, 2026. The rest of the cast is on Voice Cast.

Outfits

Clothing changes the Hero's look as you play. The pre-order bonus includes the "questionably heroic" Chicken Suit, and the Premium Edition adds two armor sets, "Splendid Armour" and "Bastard Armour", each with footwear, legs and torso pieces (Playground Games, Jun 7, 2026); see Editions and Pre-order Bonuses. The official Steam screenshots show Heroes in feathered hats, embroidered doublets, plate armor and leather.

Looks no longer follow morality

In Playground's Fable you choose how the Hero looks from the start, and press coverage of the Developer_Direct reports that, unlike in the Lionhead games, appearance does not shift with morality (Noisy Pixel, Jan 22, 2026). Morality itself now lives in what villagers think of you: see Reputation and Morality.

Childhood in Briar Hill

Fable opens with the Hero as a child in Briar Hill, where their heroic powers emerge; after a time jump you play as an adult "for the rest of the game" (Fulton, Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). Fulton calls the childhood section "maybe the first 90 minutes or so of the game" (Official Xbox Podcast, Sep 9, 2026). Where character creation falls in that opening, before or after the time jump, has not been shown, as of Oct 21, 2026.
