Briar Hill
Briar Hill is the Hero's home village and where Fable begins: the Hero grows up there with Grandma (Samira, landlady of the Rose & Thorn pub) and their brother Connor, until a mysterious stranger turns Grandma and the whole village to stone.
Briar Hill is the Hero's home village and the place Fable begins: you grow up there as a child, your heroic powers emerge there, and that is why the player's Hero is known as the Hero of Briar Hill. "In classic Fable fashion, you begin the game as a child, growing up in the sleepy rural village of Briar Hill," Playground says in this part of the Developer_Direct segment (GameSpot's upload, Jan 22, 2026), as a child with a ponytail runs along a cobbled lane past flowering hedges toward thatched cottages, with the game's prompts on screen. "It's here that in a moment of extreme danger, your heroic powers first emerge," and "we discover that you are Albion's first hero in a generation." Later, a mysterious stranger turns the village and its people to stone, and the Hero leaves to put it right. Fable launches on Feb 23, 2027.

The childhood opening
Fable opens with the Hero as a child in Briar Hill, a tradition of the series. Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, calls this stretch "the initial experience, which is maybe the first 90 minutes or so of the game, in which you're a child" (Official Xbox Podcast, Sep 9, 2026). By its end "your heroic powers have emerged, and suddenly, you're the hero of Briar Hill", the first Hero in Albion in a generation. Fulton says it is "not a spoiler to say" that this is when you realize you are a Hero and "everything changes for you" (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). How the Hero looks is chosen in Character Creation.
The time jump
After the childhood, the game jumps forward. "From there we do a time jump, and we rejoin you in Briar Hill, your starter village, in adulthood," Fulton says, "and for the rest of the game you will play as a mature adult in their prime" (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). Playground has not said how many years pass.
Turned to stone
Briar Hill's people are turned to stone, and that sets the story going. "Disaster strikes and the people of your village, including your beloved grandma, are turned to stone by a mysterious stranger," Playground says here, over dark, misty shots of two silhouetted figures; "suddenly alone in the world, you'll set off on an adventure which will change Albion forever." Fulton calls it "the inciting incident": everyone in the village is petrified, you are "suddenly alone", and your motivation is "to try and figure out what happened to them and try and reverse it". The only clue is the stranger, "who you really only caught a glimpse of" (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). Xbox and Playground have described the culprit in their written posts only as "a mysterious stranger", and this viki does not name one; the plot so far is on Story.
Leaving for Bowerstone
Grandma leaves the Hero one pointer: she mentions Bowerstone and the Heroes' Guild, where "the great heroes live" and where to go for help (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). It is only a "soft implication". Leaving Briar Hill is the first time the Hero leaves home, and from that moment the open world of Albion is yours: "there's no ticking bomb", Fulton says, and the story waits while you explore, take a job or marry. Some players go straight to the Guild, others wander first, and "we support them both" (Official Xbox Podcast). At the Guild the Hero is reunited with their brother, who finds a key to the locked door.
The people of Briar Hill
Xbox Wire's cast list of Jun 7, 2026 names the Hero's family (Xbox Wire):
- Grandma (Samira), played by Nina Wadia: the adoptive grandmother of the Hero and Connor, and landlady of the Rose & Thorn, Briar Hill's pub.
- Connor, played by Kwame Augustine: the Hero's adoptive brother, who always dreamed of becoming a Hero himself.
- The Hero of Briar Hill, the player, voiced by Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach, whichever you choose. The Hero has no other name.
The rest of the cast is on Characters.
