Enemies
Fable's enemies include bandits and returning creatures from the old games (Hobbes, Balverines and Trolls) and new ones shown in 2026: the skeletal Hollow Folk, flying Wraiths, the Lantern Keeper mini-boss and a giant fire-breathing chicken, the Cockatrice.
Fable's enemies include bandits and returning creatures from the Lionhead games, Hobbes, Balverines and Trolls, along with new ones Playground Games showed in 2026: the skeletal Hollow Folk, flying Wraiths, a mini-boss called the Lantern Keeper and giant fire-breathing chickens. The store page promises "bandits, beasts, and creatures, including brand-new enemies and fan-favorites like Hobbes, Balverines, and Trolls" (Steam), and the official FAQ adds that they are "pulled straight from British folklore" (fablethegame.com). In this clip from the Developer_Direct segment (GameSpot's upload, Jan 22, 2026) the narrator says the team is "bringing back some fan-favorite adversaries" and names Balverines and Trolls among them, over captured play of a Hero fighting in a misty green forest. The ESRB's summary lists nymphs, skeletons, bandits and trolls among the things players fight (ESRB). Playground has not published a full bestiary or boss list, as of Oct 20, 2026.

How enemy fights work
Each enemy family fights differently. Here the narrator introduces "brand new enemies, too, like this fearsome cockatrice, a giant fire-breathing chicken", while the footage shows a Hero facing a huge winged creature on a forest path, and adds that every family has "weaknesses to exploit and defenses to overcome". Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, said fights are usually against "a tactical mix of enemies" that push you to use melee, ranged weapons and magic in turn (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). The tools for that are on Combat and Magic and Spells. Most fights are one Hero against a group, Fulton said on the Official Xbox Podcast (Sep 9, 2026); one-on-one fights against big creatures or other Heroes are set pieces.
Fable's creatures also have personality, and some slapstick. In the Developer_Direct footage a Hobbe accidentally killed one of its own companions; the team kept the shot "because it's funny", and friendly fire stays in the game on purpose (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026).
Hobbes
Hobbes return from the old games, named on the store page and shown fighting at the Developer_Direct (Game Informer, Jan 22, 2026). One of them is the Hobbe of the friendly-fire accident above. Playground has not described their variants, as of Oct 20, 2026.
Balverines
Balverines return too, named on the store page and by the Developer_Direct narrator. Xbox's recap of the Jun 7, 2026 Xbox Games Showcase trailer says it shows the Hero "facing down a Balverine".
Trolls
Trolls are named on the store page and in the ESRB's summary, and the narrator of the Developer_Direct segment names them among the returning foes. Playground has not shown how they fight in detail, as of Oct 20, 2026.
Hollow Folk
Hollow Folk is the collective name for Fable's skeletons. Xbox Wire met melee, ranged and armored kinds in the gamescom demo on Aug 26, 2026. Armored ones are immune to ranged attacks on their armored parts, which forces a change of approach. All Hollow Folk can be dismembered where they wear no armor, and keep coming without their limbs; a well-timed parry can knock a skeleton's head clean off, leaving it staggering and less accurate.
Wraiths
Wraiths are fast, flying ghosts: very weak, but dangerous if not dealt with quickly, because they spawn and inhabit more Hollow Folk during a fight, and pop out again for a second stage when those are beaten. Xbox Wire found the Repeater Crossbow brought them down in a couple of bolts.
The Lantern Keeper
The Lantern Keeper is a mini-boss from the gamescom demo, the quest "Mud and Death" in a haunted mine: large and slow but able to fly, with a big health bar, an unblockable fire breath, explosive projectiles and the power to spawn Wraiths. Its lantern is its weak point, which ranged weapons hit best (Xbox Wire). Gameblog, which played about 40 minutes of the demo, found the fight too passive.
Giant chickens and the Cockatrice
"Giant fire-breathing chickens" are on the store page's list of foes (Steam). The one fought at the Developer_Direct is a Cockatrice, as the narrator calls it and CGMagazine reported (CGMagazine, Jan 22, 2026). The rest of Fable's chickens, from the ones you kick to the spell that makes them, are on Chickens.
The giant toad and other giants
A giant toad has turned up twice. In Xbox's 2024 trailer, Humphry lists what a Hero puts up with, from mega-fans and haters to "chancers and, uh, the occasional giant toad", which croaks on cue. The Jun 7, 2026 story trailer then showed the Hero putting a giant toad "face-down (with a dose of magic)". Not every giant is an enemy to fight: Dave the Giant is a quest in which the Hero chooses whether to kill him or spare him.
Not enemies: Demon Doors
Demon Doors return as "opinionated gatekeepers" that guard mysterious areas and their rewards (fablethegame.com, Jun 7, 2026), but they are part of the world, not foes; they are on Albion.

CombatFable's combat lets the Hero switch at any moment between melee, ranged weapons and magic (the old games' Strength, Skill and Will), a system Playground Games calls "style-weaving", usually with one Hero against a group of enemies. There is a dodge, a parry, weapon finishers and a combat intensity setting. -
Magic and SpellsFable's gamescom 2026 demo showed seven spells, cast by holding RT and pressing a face button from four slots, each with a cooldown: Fireball, Lightning, Blades, Lift, Rush, Push and Befowl, which turns people into chickens. The full spell list has not been published. -
ChickensChickens are Fable's running joke and part of its systems: kicking them where people can see earns the Reputation "Chicken Chaser", the Befowl spell turns enemies into chickens, giant fire-breathing chickens are enemies, a Demon Door hides a chicken-kicking minigame, and pre-orders get a Chicken Suit and a Toy Chicken. -
Dave the GiantDave the Giant, played by Richard Ayoade, is a gardener who turns himself into a giant with a magical growth formula; in Fable the Hero chooses whether to kill or spare him, and the choice changes the settlement of Silverbrook.

AlbionAlbion is the world of Fable, a fairytale version of medieval England that Playground Games has built, for the first time in the series, as one seamless open world the Hero can roam freely from early in the game. Its named places include Briar Hill, Bowerstone, Bloodstone, Silverbrook and Wraithmarsh; a map size, region count and fast travel have not been announced. -
Character CreationFable lets you design your Hero in a character creator, choosing from a range of heads and customizing hairstyle, skin tone, clothing, tattoos and scars. The Hero is voiced by Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach, and your looks no longer change with your deeds as they did in the Lionhead games.
