Magic and Spells
Fable's gamescom 2026 demo showed seven spells, cast by holding RT and pressing a face button from four slots, each with a cooldown: Fireball, Lightning, Blades, Lift, Rush, Push and Befowl, which turns people into chickens. The full spell list has not been published.
Fable's gamescom 2026 demo showed seven spells, cast by holding RT and pressing A, B, X or Y from four slots, each going on a cooldown after use: Fireball, Lightning, Blades, Lift, Rush, Push and Befowl, which turns people into chickens. Magic is what makes a Hero a Hero in this Albion: in the Developer_Direct segment (GameSpot's upload, Jan 22, 2026) the narrator says Heroes are "those rare humans who can harness and use magic", with the power "to do what they want", before the segment turns to character creation. Spells are the "Will" of the series' old Strength, Skill and Will, and the Hero weaves them with melee and ranged weapons in one fight (see Combat). Playground Games has not published the full spell list, as of Oct 20, 2026; Will Kennedy, Associate Game Director, wrote that new "magical powers" unlock as the game goes on (PlayStation Blog, Aug 28, 2026).

How casting works
Xbox Wire played the gamescom demo, the quest "Mud and Death", on Aug 26, 2026, twice with two loadouts. The demo was set a little way into the game, so the Hero came with a full spell menu: hold RT, press one of the four face buttons, and the spell in that slot fires and goes on a cooldown. On the Official Xbox Podcast (Sep 9, 2026), Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, explained that spells take different forms depending on how long they are charged. With only four slots, the spells you pick shape how you play: Xbox Wire saw room for builds centered on ranged, up-close, evasive or area attacks, or for spells that fill gaps left by your weapons.
Spells are both for damage and for control. The narrator says you can "unleash your powerful spells to both manipulate and devastate your opponents". Kennedy described the same split: some Heroes will fill their loadout with high-damage spells such as Fireball or Lightning, others will control the battlefield with Befowl and Lift (PlayStation Blog).
Fireball
Fireball can be thrown quickly to interrupt an enemy, or charged into a room-clearing explosion (Xbox Wire). Fulton's example of style-weaving is a sword strike followed by a fireball "in a smooth movement" (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026).
Lightning
Lightning sends down bolts that chain to nearby enemies. It pairs with Lift: "What if I Lightning Spell some folks that I've lifted up into the air?" Fulton asked on the podcast, as an example of combining spells.
Blades
Blades summons phantom daggers, which Xbox Wire found good for picking off several distant enemies at once.
Lift
Lift draws several enemies helplessly into the air, open to ranged attacks or Lightning; cast it again while they hang there and the whole group slams back to the ground. Kennedy listed it, with Befowl, among the spells for Heroes who prefer to control the battlefield.
Rush
Rush teleports the Hero behind a target for a surprise melee attack, and can carry the Hero upward, so it reaches archers perched in hard-to-reach places.
Push
Push forces enemies back from around the Hero. Combined with Rush it becomes a trap: teleport behind an enemy standing on a ledge, then push it off.
Befowl
Befowl turns people into chickens. A Befowled enemy is effectively harmless, so you can deal with others first, or kick it away; cast on an undead enemy, it makes an undead chicken (Xbox Wire). Kennedy wrote that the change is temporary. Its place in Fable's long running joke is on Chickens.
Magic against enemies
Spells are not the answer to everything. In the demo, Xbox Wire found the bow hit the Lantern Keeper's lantern better than any of its spells; the creatures and their weak points are on Enemies. Xbox Wire's suggested combination used all three styles: a spell to hold back weak enemies, a ranged shot to stagger a strong one, a melee finisher to end it. The Jun 7, 2026 story trailer also showed the Hero putting a giant toad "face-down (with a dose of magic)".
Will in the old games
The Lionhead trilogy split its Hero's abilities into Strength, Skill and Will, and Will was magic. Playground's reboot keeps the three but turns them into one fluid system rather than separate paths, Fulton said (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). In Playground's in-world "History of Albion", ordinary people first gained magic through their "Will" (fablethegame.com, Aug 10, 2026), an in-world legend rather than a rule of the game. How the old games differ is on Fable Series.

CombatFable's combat lets the Hero switch at any moment between melee, ranged weapons and magic (the old games' Strength, Skill and Will), a system Playground Games calls "style-weaving", usually with one Hero against a group of enemies. There is a dodge, a parry, weapon finishers and a combat intensity setting. -
ChickensChickens are Fable's running joke and part of its systems: kicking them where people can see earns the Reputation "Chicken Chaser", the Befowl spell turns enemies into chickens, giant fire-breathing chickens are enemies, a Demon Door hides a chicken-kicking minigame, and pre-orders get a Chicken Suit and a Toy Chicken. -
EnemiesFable's enemies include bandits and returning creatures from the old games (Hobbes, Balverines and Trolls) and new ones shown in 2026: the skeletal Hollow Folk, flying Wraiths, the Lantern Keeper mini-boss and a giant fire-breathing chicken, the Cockatrice. -
Fable SeriesFable (2027) is a reboot of the series Lionhead Studios began on Xbox in 2004, "not a remake or a sequel", so no earlier Fable game is needed to play it. The trilogy was Fable, Fable II and Fable III; Lionhead closed in 2016.

Character CreationFable lets you design your Hero in a character creator, choosing from a range of heads and customizing hairstyle, skin tone, clothing, tattoos and scars. The Hero is voiced by Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach, and your looks no longer change with your deeds as they did in the Lionhead games. -
Living PopulationFable's "Living Population" is its cast of more than 1,000 hand-designed villagers, each with a name, a Trait, a home, a job and a daily schedule, all fully voiced by about 100 actors. The Hero can befriend, employ, rent to, marry or kill every adult among them.
