2020: the announce teaser
Xbox announced Fable at its Xbox Games Showcase on Jul 23, 2020, "developed by Playground Games for Xbox Series X, and Windows 10 and coming to Xbox Game Pass", with no date. The short cinematic teaser showed a fairy in a forest who is eaten by a toad, a joke on "Not every story has a happy ending", as GamesBeat described it. It showed no gameplay.
2023: Dave the Giant
The trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase of Jun 11, 2023 introduced Richard Ayoade as Dave, who grumbles that the age of Heroes is over and is revealed as a giant fighting off Heroes (Game Informer). His story and the choice the Hero makes about him are on Dave the Giant.
2024: "What Does It Mean to be a Hero?"
The 2024 trailer, at the Xbox Games Showcase of Jun 9, 2024, is narrated by Humphry (Matt King): Heroes have "mega-fans", haters ("It's like a fan club, but we hate you"), chancers "and the occasional giant toad", but being a Hero is "about the choices you make". It then turns to a young Hero he took in, "terrifying" in her power, and ends on a rival Hero who says she will "fix" Albion and that "no one is going to stand in my way". Xbox gave the game a 2025 window that day and said Eidos Montreal would support development; the date was later moved twice (Release Date and Time).
Feb 2025: the delay and pre-alpha clips
On the Official Xbox Podcast of Feb 25, 2025, Craig Duncan, then head of Xbox Game Studios, moved Fable to 2026 (Thurrott); the episode included short pre-alpha clips of combat with a werewolf-like creature, a city and horse riding (TheSixthAxis).
Jan 22, 2026: Developer_Direct
Fable's segment of the Xbox Developer_Direct on Jan 22, 2026 was the first in-depth look at the game: the Hero's childhood in Briar Hill until the village and Grandma are turned to stone by "a mysterious stranger", Albion and Bowerstone, Character Creation, Combat against Hobbes and a giant fire-breathing chicken, Dave the Giant's choice, property, marriage and children, the 1,000-strong Living Population, and the news that Fable was coming to PlayStation 5 (Xbox Wire). GameSpot's upload of the segment, linked here, runs 10:54 with chapters.
Xbox also cut a 38-second teaser from it, built on four title cards: "Be the hero you want to be", "Build an extraordinary life", "Your choices change the world" and "Fairytale ending not guaranteed", over captured play with the HUD (an outfit at a wardrobe, a bow drawn in a field, a dating gift, a "Chicken Chaser" reputation notice) and ending on the platforms card.
Jun 7, 2026: the release date trailer
The story trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase of Jun 7, 2026 centered on Isabel, the Hero of Wraithmarsh, played by Hayley Atwell, showed a Balverine and a giant toad, gave "a first glimpse of the Jack of Blades" (official site), confirmed Demon Doors, and announced the date, Feb 23, 2027, with pre-orders opening that day. The cast was named alongside it (Voice Cast).
Jun 10, 2026: "Build an Extraordinary Life"
A 30-minute gameplay video titled "Fable - Gameplay Demo | Build an Extraordinary Life" followed the Living Population deep dive on Jun 10, 2026. Despite "Gameplay Demo" in its title it is a video, not a playable demo. It shows the life systems in a village: talking with villagers, romance, buying property, and, at the end, the Hero turning on the townsfolk. Some viewers called its combat too easy; Playground said it was played on Story difficulty (Vice).
Digital Foundry's DF Direct Weekly of Jun 15, 2026 recounts it: about 25 minutes of managing the town nicely and romancing a shopkeeper, then "randomly killing people" after saving a talking pig, and the grim alternative fates of Colin the pig.
Aug 2026: gamescom gameplay
At gamescom, Playground presented combat gameplay on Aug 26, 2026: the quest "Mud and Death" in a flooded, haunted mine with Humphry, the same build press and creators played that week. Xbox then released quest gameplay set in Bowerstone on Aug 28, 2026, which Xbox Wire calls "a full 18 minutes of gameplay": every building can be entered and every house bought, with choice and consequence and combat. The PlayStation Blog described its version of the combat video as "an action-packed, uninterrupted gameplay demo as the Hero journeys to the Underwall" (PlayStation Blog). Hands-on verdicts are on Previews and Reception.
Sep 2026: the Official Xbox Podcast
On Sep 9, 2026, the Official Xbox Podcast published a conversation with Ralph Fulton recorded at gamescom, about combat, Bowerstone, the story's opening and the expansion (Order of the Hero).

Character CreationFable lets you design your Hero in a character creator, choosing from a range of heads and customizing hairstyle, skin tone, clothing, tattoos and scars. The Hero is voiced by Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach, and your looks no longer change with your deeds as they did in the Lionhead games. -
CombatFable's combat lets the Hero switch at any moment between melee, ranged weapons and magic (the old games' Strength, Skill and Will), a system Playground Games calls "style-weaving", usually with one Hero against a group of enemies. There is a dodge, a parry, weapon finishers and a combat intensity setting.
