Humphry the Golden, played by Matt King, is the disgraced Guildmaster of the Heroes' Guild in Fable: once "Albion's greatest Hero", now hidden away in the Guild's empty halls in Bowerstone, where the Hero of Briar Hill comes looking for help. He introduced himself in Fable's trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase of Jun 9, 2024: slumped in a chair in the dim Guild, he calls himself "perhaps the greatest Hero of them all", raises a tankard to his own portrait ("There he is, in all his finery. Cheers!"), chokes and drops it, and a title card reads "Humphry, Albion's greatest Hero", then adds "retired". The official spelling is Humphry, without an "e", though many outlets write "Humphrey".

The 2024 trailer

Xbox summed the trailer up as "a much darker take" on what it means to be a Hero: "Humphry was once Albion's greatest Hero, but those glory days are long gone. In Fable, Humphry will be forced out of retirement when a mysterious figure from his past threatens the very existence of Albion" (Xbox Wire, Jun 9, 2024). In it Humphry talks about the life of a Hero, with its "mega-fans", "haters", "chancers" and "the occasional giant toad", and says what matters is "the choices you make".

Then he tells of a young Hero he once took in "when she had nowhere else to go", whom he welcomed "to the most exclusive club in all of Albion"; she "had it all", skill, talent and power, and was "terrifying": "I knew this girl once who made all the wrong choices." The scene ends with a Hero warning him, "Humphry. She's back." Xbox later called Isabel, the game's villain, "a former pupil of Guildmaster Humphry the Golden" (Xbox Wire), but has not said in so many words that she is the girl in this trailer. Every trailer is on Trailers and Showcases.

The Guildmaster in Bowerstone

The Developer_Direct of Jan 22, 2026 placed him in the capital: in Bowerstone, "a huge city full of contrasts", the Hero will "discover the secrets of the Heroes' Guild and its reclusive Guildmaster, Humphry the Golden". The Hero goes there after Briar Hill is turned to stone, because Grandma had said to go to the Guild in trouble. Ralph Fulton, GM and Game Director, described the moment on the Official Xbox Podcast (Sep 9, 2026): unlocking the door and going inside the Guild "for the first time as a hero myself", then meeting "Albion's greatest living hero", who is "not what you see, or what you, perhaps, hope and expect". There the Hero chooses whether to get him a drink or throw one over him; Fulton answered that "we have all sizes of choice and of consequence". Xbox's write-up of the gamescom 2026 quest video calls him the "disgraced leader of the Heroes' Guild" (Xbox Wire, Aug 28, 2026).

Mud and Death

In the first playable demo, shown to press and creators at gamescom on Aug 26, 2026, the quest "Mud and Death" has the Hero join "the leader of the Heroes' Guild, Humphry on a trip into a once-flooded, now-haunted mine packed with ghosts and skeletons", and Humphry "calls out your choice of weapon on the way into the mine" (Xbox Wire). The fighting is on Combat.

Matt King

Matt King is best known as Super Hans in the British sitcom Peep Show, and has appeared in films including Paddington and Bronson (Xbox Wire). Craig Owens, Associate Narrative Director: "Arrogant, charming and equally happy with a mace or pint in his hand, Humphry is Albion's greatest Hero. Or at least he was. Over the course of the game, people will come to understand the man behind the legend, and why the swaggering champion of the Heroes' Guild has spent the last few years of his life hidden away in the otherwise empty halls of the Guild." On the casting: "Matt brought a lot of Super Hans' dark charm to his performance as Humphry. But he also brought a real emotional depth and dignity." Richard Ayoade is not Humphry: he plays Dave the Giant. The full cast is on Voice Cast.
