Demon Doors

Yes, Demon Doors return in Fable (2027): Playground Games' FAQ calls them "sentient and overly opinionated stone doors" that guard mysterious areas and their rewards, and one hides a chicken-kicking minigame. How many there are and how each opens has not been revealed, as of Nov 1, 2026.

Yes, Demon Doors are back in Fable: Playground Games' official FAQ confirms the return of the "sentient and overly opinionated stone doors" that "gatekeep mysterious areas and the rewards that lie within" (official FAQ), and Playground said at the Xbox Games Showcase on Jun 7, 2026 that one of them hides a chicken-kicking minigame (official site). How many doors the reboot has, where they stand and what each asks of the Hero had not been revealed as of Nov 1, 2026. Fable launches on Feb 23, 2027.

Seen from behind, a figure with ginger hair under a broad brown hat with large gray feathers wears a pale green embroidered waistcoat over brown sleeves, a slim sword with a basket hilt at the hip. Ahead, a huge weathered human face is carved into a cliff of mossy rock framed by curling stone shapes. Yellow wildflowers and green grass fill the foreground. No game interface is shown.

Are Demon Doors in the new Fable?

Yes. The FAQ question "Will there be Demon Doors?" is answered with a yes and the description above (official FAQ). Playground's June 2026 showcase post adds the doors' role as "opinionated gatekeepers" of mysterious areas, and says that behind one of them waits "a foe so ancient and so iconic" that no Hero's journey is complete without it: a chicken-kicking minigame (official site, Jun 7, 2026). The birds' other parts in the game are on Chickens.

The image above, an official Steam screenshot, shows a Hero walking toward a giant face carved into a mossy rock wall. Playground has not said whether it is a Demon Door, so it is shown here only as what it is.

How do you open a Demon Door?

Playground has not said how the reboot's doors open, as of Nov 1, 2026. In the Lionhead games each door set its own condition, usually a test of how the Hero had chosen to live, which is why the doors suit a game about Reputation and Morality. In Playground's in-world history the Maker, one of the Court of Blades, gave voice and motion to inanimate things such as doors (Lore and History of Albion).

Demon Doors in Fable (2004)

The first Fable had 12 Demon Doors, and The Lost Chapters edition (2005) raised it to 15, according to GameBanshee's guide (GameBanshee). Their conditions show what a door could ask:

  • Greatwood Gorge opened for a Hero who was evil enough, for instance by killing people in front of it.
  • Barrow Fields wanted a fat Hero, fed on pies and meat.
  • Rose Cottage wanted a gift, such as a red rose or chocolates.
  • "Grey House" opened only for a Hero married to "Lady Grey" of Bowerstone.
  • Abandoned Road asked the Hero to wear three full suits of armor in turn.
  • Witchwood Stones opened when four pillars were struck in the right order.

Engadget, revisiting the game for Fable Anniversary in 2014, called the doors "giant, talking faces of stone" and judged that none ever held anything as pleasurable "as the act of opening them" (Engadget, Feb 4, 2014).

Demon Doors in Fable 2 (2008)

Fable 2 had nine, again by GameBanshee's count (GameBanshee). Among them, the Bowerstone Cemetery door wanted a chicken kicked into it as its meal, the Oakfield door wanted to see the Hero engaged, the Rookridge door wanted the Hero's dog to perform tricks, the Wraithmarsh door wanted an audience of townsfolk, and the Fairfax Gardens door opened only after the other eight. Two of those places, Wraithmarsh and Bloodstone, are named again in the reboot, which is "a new beginning" with its own Albion (Fable Series).
