Fable is Playground Games' open-world action RPG reboot of the Fable series, published by Xbox Game Studios, launching Feb 23, 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PC (Xbox app and Steam) and PlayStation 5, day one with Game Pass, with Premium Edition Early Access from Feb 18. This clip, from GameSpot's upload of the Fable segment of Xbox's Developer_Direct (Jan 22, 2026), is 44 seconds of captured play with the game's interface on screen, a health bar and button prompts: a Hero fights among old statues in a sunlit field, then in a dim green hollow, brawls with a group of enemies in a torchlit cave, and finally draws a bow on a flying enemy. Over it the narrator explains that Heroes fight with "strength, skill, and will", use "light and heavy combos" and "stylish finishers", and swap to a ranged weapon "to bypass enemy guard". That mix of melee, ranged weapons and magic, switched at any moment, is the heart of Combat; around it sits a life in a living Albion where, as the store puts it, "reputation is everything" (Steam). Fable is single-player only, and the main story takes "around 15-20 hours" with another "15-20 hours of side content" (official FAQ).

What Fable is
Fable is a reboot of the series Lionhead Studios began in 2004, made by Playground Games, the Forza Horizon studio. In the Developer_Direct segment Playground calls it its "first open-world action RPG", says it is proud to carry on the work of "the legendary Lionhead Studios", and calls the game "a new beginning" that is still "faithful to the spirit of the classic Lionhead trilogy". The game is about one question, what it means to be a Hero, and about "choices and their consequences", with "action, drama, British humor, moral dilemmas" and "quite a few chickens". Ralph Fulton, its GM and Game Director, puts it plainly: "Fable is not a remake or a sequel" (PlayStation Blog, Jan 22, 2026). No earlier game is needed to follow it; how it relates to the old games is on Fable Series.
Playground built the game on design pillars it found in Lionhead's own documents. One reads "Fable is Fairytale, not Fantasy"; another is Britishness in humor, tone and sensibility, with Peep Show, The IT Crowd and The Office named as inspirations (Xbox Wire, Jan 22, 2026). The official tagline is "Fairytale Ending Not Guaranteed." The game is made by "a newly formed team" at Playground, separate from the Forza Horizon team, on the studio's own ForzaTech engine; the studio is on Playground Games and the road from the 2020 reveal to launch on Development.
The story so far
Fable begins with the Hero as a child in the sleepy village of Briar Hill. In this part of the segment a child runs through the village's lanes while the narrator explains that "in a moment of extreme danger, your heroic powers first emerge", revealing "Albion's first hero in a generation"; then a hooded figure appears in the dark as the people of the village, the Hero's grandmother among them, are "turned to stone by a mysterious stranger". Alone, the Hero sets out on an adventure "which will change Albion forever". The childhood opening runs about the first 90 minutes, after which the game jumps ahead and is played as an adult (Xbox Wire, Sep 9, 2026). The player's Hero has no name: Xbox calls them the Hero of Briar Hill.
Grandma sends the Hero to the Heroes' Guild in Bowerstone, where the Hero meets Guildmaster Humphry the Golden, a former great Hero long past his glory days. The game's villain is Isabel, the Hero of Wraithmarsh, a former pupil of Humphry's whose obsession with righting Albion's wrongs drove her to darkness (Xbox Wire, Jun 7, 2026). The same trailer "teased the return of the legendary Jack of Blades", the masked villain of the 2004 game, whose role "will be revealed later". There is no ticking clock: after Briar Hill the Hero can go anywhere and the main quest waits (Xbox Wire). The plot as officially told is on Story, with Isabel, Humphry and the Jack of Blades on pages of their own.
Albion and Bowerstone
Albion, the setting, is "Albion like you've never seen it before", in the words of this part of the segment, which passes over rolling hills, a magical forest, villages, an outsized vegetable patch and a sunset vista before arriving at Bowerstone's castle. For the first time in the series Albion is "truly open world", so it can be explored "seamlessly with the freedom to go where you want from early in the game". Xbox Wire describes it as medieval England "seen through a fairytale lens". Places named so far include Briar Hill; Bloodstone, a "bleak, windswept city" in the north where two rival heirs feud; Silverbrook; Wraithmarsh; and Bowerstone, the "iconic capital city" with Fairfax Castle, the old clock tower and the Heroes' Guild. In Bowerstone "every building can be entered, and every house can be bought" (Xbox Wire, Aug 28, 2026). Playground's in-world history of the land is on Lore and History of Albion. Map size, the number of regions and fast travel have not been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026.
Combat and magic
Combat mixes the old games' Strength, Skill and Will (melee, ranged and magic) and lets the Hero switch between them at any moment, which Playground calls style-weaving (PlayStation Blog, Aug 28, 2026). The Hero dodges and parries, and weak-point shots stagger enemies. The gamescom 2026 demo showed a two-handed Bower Hammer, the Deepwood Bow and a Repeater Crossbow, and seven spells cast from four slots: Fireball, Lightning, Blades, Lift, Rush, Push and Befowl, which turns people into chickens (Xbox Wire, Aug 26, 2026). Players "can pick a combat intensity level", in the words of Associate Game Director Will Kennedy. Details are on Combat and Magic and Spells.
Enemies
The store promises "bandits, beasts, and creatures, including brand-new enemies and fan-favorites like Hobbes, Balverines, and Trolls", as well as "giant fire-breathing chickens" (Steam). The gamescom demo added the skeletal Hollow Folk, flying Wraiths and a mini-boss called the Lantern Keeper. Each enemy family has "their own weaknesses to exploit", the Developer_Direct segment says. They are on Enemies, and the birds, friendly and not, on Chickens.
Reputation and morality
Fable has no good-or-evil meter. Here the segment says that "morality isn't black and white" and that "morality is subjective", while the Hero walks a village lane and a "Chicken Chaser" notice appears on screen: everything the Hero does "earns you a reputation", and "every person in Albion will have a different reaction to you as a result". The scene ends on the line Ralph Fulton repeats in interviews: "Our game will never judge you. But the people of Albion will." Deeds that someone witnesses, or that the Hero repeats, become Reputations, kept per settlement, up to six at once; they change what villagers shout, who will date or marry the Hero, and shop prices, and a Reputation can be changed by behaving differently or by paying the Town Crier (Xbox Wire). Some choices reshape the map: the Hero may kill or spare Dave the Giant, and a giant's corpse outside town moves house prices. The system is on Reputation and Morality.
Villagers, romance and property
The people of Albion are the Living Population: "1,000+ hand crafted NPCs", each with a Trait, a home, a job and a daily schedule, voiced by about 100 actors (Xbox Wire, Jun 10, 2026). Every adult can be befriended, employed, romanced, married, lived with, had children with or killed. The Hero can buy any house and become a landlord who sets the rent, buy shops and set wages (a villager who dislikes the Hero may refuse to work), or take a job such as blacksmith. The store sums it up: "Get filthy rich as a landlord or blacksmith, romance a villager (or three), have a bunch of kids". Gifts move opinions, which is why the pre-order and Premium Edition items are gifts. See Living Population, Romance, Marriage and Children and Property and Jobs.
Character creation and the cast
Players shape their Hero's head, hairstyle and skin tone (FAQ); the Developer_Direct adds clothing, tattoos and scars. The Hero speaks with one of two voices, Lily Nichol or Ukweli Roach (Character Creation). The cast announced on Jun 7, 2026 includes Hayley Atwell as Isabel, Matt King as Humphry, Richard Ayoade as Dave the Giant, Susan Wokoma, Natasia Demetriou, Nathan Foad, Kwame Augustine, Nina Wadia and Robert Whitelock (Xbox Wire). The people of the story are on Characters and the actors on Voice Cast.
Platforms and Game Pass
Fable launches on Xbox Series X|S, PC through the Xbox app and Steam, Xbox Cloud and PlayStation 5. It is the first Fable on a PlayStation: "For the first time in the franchise's history, Fable is coming to PlayStation 5" (Fulton, PlayStation Blog). It is not coming to Xbox One, and no Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 version has been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026. It supports Xbox Play Anywhere, one purchase for console and PC, and offers "the option to play at both 30 and 60 fps" (FAQ). It is playable day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. See Platforms, Game Pass and PC System Requirements.
Release date
Fable launches on Feb 23, 2027, the same day everywhere; Xbox's words are "Fable arrives February 23, 2027, with early access for the Premium Edition beginning February 18" (Xbox Wire). Xbox and Playground have not announced a launch hour, as of Oct 20, 2026; the PlayStation Store lists 4:00 p.m. UTC. The date has moved twice. In 2024 Xbox said the game was coming in 2025 (Xbox Wire); in Feb 2025 it was moved to 2026, and the Developer_Direct gave fall 2026; on May 29, 2026 Xbox moved it to February 2027 "so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves" (Game Informer), and Matt Booty said Xbox wanted the game to have "a window of its own". The full history is on Release Date and Time, and the five days before launch on Early Access.
Editions and pre-order bonuses
Fable sells in two digital editions on every store: the Standard Edition at $69.99 (Xbox Store) and the Premium Edition at $99.99 (Xbox Store). Premium adds Early Access, two armor sets, nine in-game gifts, a digital artbook and soundtrack by composer Jacob Shea, and the Order of the Hero story expansion, which comes after launch (official site). Pre-orders of any edition, until launch, get a Chicken Suit and three gifts. The Collector's Edition, with a Jack of Blades statuette, sold out in June 2026 with no restock. Game Pass members and Standard owners can buy a Premium Upgrade. Everything is compared on Editions and Pre-order Bonuses.
The expansion
Fable: Order of the Hero is "a story expansion in a new region of Albion" in which the Hero uncovers an ancient cult and becomes its "newest celebrity overseer" (official site, Jun 7, 2026). It is part of the Premium Edition, the Collector's Edition and the Premium Upgrade; no date or separate price has been announced, as of Oct 20, 2026 (Order of the Hero).
Playground and the series
Lionhead Studios made the original Fable (2004) and its sequels, and was closed in 2016 after Microsoft canceled Fable Legends (GameSpot, Mar 7, 2016). Playground joined Microsoft on Jun 10, 2018 for "an entirely new project", and Fable was announced on Jul 23, 2020 as "a new beginning for the legendary franchise". Eidos Montreal supports development (Xbox Wire, Jun 9, 2024). On Sep 22, 2026 Xbox said that "Playground and Turn 10 will come together as one studio focused on the Forza and Fable franchises" (Xbox Wire); the memo said nothing about Fable's date. Albion, Bowerstone, the Heroes' Guild, Hobbes, Balverines, Demon Doors and the chickens all return from the old games. Every trailer and showcase is on Trailers and Showcases, and the hands-on verdicts so far on Previews and Reception.
